A city built up in the center of the massive Malian Desert, Akheta is built within a huge Oasis, further fed by a river, and manifesting itself as a gargantuan lake. Travelers who have visited the city gape as they recall its beauty, its wonder, and its sheer power. It is controlled by the Kyuran, an ancient tribe of humans who, upon learning magic from dragons, inscribed magic runes onto their bodies, granting them innate supernatural abilities. Over time, as the Kyurans conquered others, they gave them the option of inscribing runes upon themselves as well, which many took. No longer referred to as humans, these people are most often called Illumians, due to the Illumination emitted by the runes on their flesh. As opposed to Selera, magic is not feared or restricted in Akheta, with mages occupying a higher station in life than anyone else. However, other than that, Akheta is actually more rigid and restrictive, with a caste system that every member of its society must adhere to. At the top are the Kyurans, the original founders of the city, and at the bottom, beneath even slaves, are the Skulks.
When other countries refer to Akheta, they are typically speaking of their large empire, extending up the river, throughout the desert, and down into the Orcish plains, which they use to recruit slave labor. The Akhetans believe that their emperor is destined to control the earth, as he is descended from Jebreia, a deity not typically worshiped anywhere else. However, as evidenced by the divine powers of their royal family, there is something to their claims.
