Another relative of Hobgoblins, the Bugbears are clearly physically stronger, but lack the military mindset of their cousins. Instead, they are exceptionally cruel and bloodthirsty, and gladly accept partnership with Hobgoblins when it means they’ll probably get to beat something’s face in. Hobgoblins, however, do not use Bugbears as frequently, firstly because the aren’t as populous as their smaller cousins, and second because the Hobgoblins themselves are occasionally taken aback by the unreasoning viciousness of their companions. It’s not uncommon for a warband with a bugbear in their numbers to wake up in the morning and find that, in the middle of the night, a goblin has been partially eaten by what the Bugbear, trying to cover his bloodstained teeth, describes as a “gigantic wolf”.
Of course, this is frightening. But, given that it happened to a goblin, it’s also hilarious.
