The Furthest Port Town in the Illumian Empire from Akheta, Grushk can be seen in one of two ways: It is either a haven for escaped Orc slaves, or it is a pit of cess and crime. A more accurate perspective would be both. Many among the Illumian empire considered Grushk an unnecessary town, being so far south that the only purpose it served was to remind the local Orc tribes of an Illumian presence. Once the Orcs were thoroughly enslaved, even those who had defended the building of the settlement lost interest in it, and left it much to its own devices. As a result of the Illumian empire’s light hand in Grushk, the power vacuum has been filled by crime syndicates, many of whom are largely Orcish, and should technically, under Akhetan law, be slaves. However, crimelords pay off city officials to look the other way, and if any Orcish citizen of the town doesn’t pay up, it’s common for him to be “reported” as an escaped slave.
That being said, there are many escaped slaves in Grushk. Not just Orcs, but of every race. In addition to the crime industry, the industry for shipping slaves off-continent (to who knows where) is huge, here. Unfortunately, many of these shippers are also a part of said crime syndicates, and often make their money by turning North and selling off their cargo. It doesn’t help that Orcs tend to be very gullible, especially after generations of slavery.
A large church belonging to a radical sect of the Sisters of Light has been built in the town, the most Illumian presence there. This particular group advocates abolition, though they do not represent the Sisterhood as a whole and do not claim to.
