The Thieve's Guild
A secret organization offering fencing and black market connections to whomever joins it, the Thieve’s Guild either has a secret leader, or no leader at all. They have no official guild house or houses, and meet on streets when guards aren’t looking, flashing each other a sigil and answering a brief password question. They watch the goings on of every city they occupy, and give thieves the information and resources that they need to pull off effective robberies. It can be assumed that there are paid “watchers” whose duty it is to perform recon, though who pays them no one knows.
Given that not a single member of the Thieve’s Guild even knows how it operates, aside from how it benefits them, it can adapt and escape prosecution as necessary. If a Thief is caught, and confesses to being a member, the guild as a whole will deny any association with him, and he will have no detailed information of the guild, whose in it, and who runs it. There are several Thieve’s Guild pass conversations currently being used. They are frequently abandoned, whenever a thief is caught and exposes one. Below is an example.
Approachee: “What’s your name, again?”
Approacher: “I didn’t offer it. Yours?”
Approachee: “There are no names.”
Approacher: “There never are.”
